About Us

At the feet of the Andes, sitting at 1090m above sea level, is 72 ha of wine paradise, Ernesto Catena Vineyard’s Finca Nakbé. A variety of grapes, including Malbec, Cabernet Sauvignon and Syrah are grown over 48 ha of cultivated land, however Nakbé is more than just a vineyard, it is a piece of art, a perfect example of the symphony between man and land.

The fusion of nature and art is immediately apparent at Finca Nakbé. The enormous labyrinth, grown from only Malbec grapevines, encompasses a philosophy integral to the vineyard; the creation of great wine in equilibrium with a care and passion for the land on which it is grown. The land that gives the vines life, after all, gives life to man also.

Furthermore, a glass of wine is brought to life by the land and this is achieved so effectively here through the practice of biodynamics. The vineyard has been Demeter certified biodynamic since 2012, taking practices beyond organic through the generation of Nakbé’s inputs, such as native yeast, from the living dynamics of the vineyard. At Ernesto Catena Vineyards, wine is made through the translation of land to glass. Here, the winemaker does not create, he interprets and in the words of Alejandro, winemaker at Ernesto Catena Vineyards, “this is the most genuine way of representing our terroir and making the best wines.”

Man and land exist in total harmony at the vineyard and the balance of viticulture and nature resounds throughout, not only in the atmosphere of the place but woven into the land and, in turn, through the vines, the grapes and of course the wine.

It is not only the land that affects the farm, universal energy is a pillar of biodynamics, the energy omnipresent in the cosmos has a significant influence on life and therefore the vineyard. A calendar taking into account the movement of the sun, moon and stars is used to ensure the perfect moment to undertake specific tasks.
To stand in Finca Nakbé is to be transported to the very roots of wine making. It is not “worked” but rather, it is cultivated and supported like a living organism. The chickens and the llamas, the cows and the vegetables are each instrumental to the life of the vineyard, together they form the extraordinary dynamic that is our finca. This holistic approach emphasizes the spirit so intrinsic to the wines from here, a real sense of all things working as one, everything intertwined.

Tasting a wine from Ernesto Catena is not just about taste, it evokes a sense of place, of the land, the soil and it is easy to see why.
