“Healing the planet through agriculture”

“Some of the most beautiful hues found in nature are reflected in the lavender flower. They appeal to the eye with a blend of color and beauty. The sweet, fresh aroma of the lavender flower nourishes the spirit - whether as a spray or an oil. As an essenstial oil, lavender oil has been used as far back as the ancient egyptians as a perfume as well as a cure for ailments such as migraines and muscle and joint pain.”
- John Schaeffer

About Us

SunHawk Farms is a small family-owned Biodynamic farm located above Hopland in Mendocino County California. Owners John Schaeffer and Nantzy Hensley have lived on and worked the farm since 2001. Our Biodynamic farm and homestead is a microcosm of the image of life.

Surrounding our farm is the wild and untouched forest; as the fertility, pest control, and water dynamics that a healthy forest needs to thrive lie within the forest’s ecosystem itself. Abundant with life, our farm breathes in the untamed forest that surrounds us and breathes out a unique vitality through our lavender, fruit and nut orchards, grapes olives, and vegetable gardens

SunHawk Farms is rooted in holistic observations of life itself. When we look at nature holistically, it becomes evident that numerous forces are at work, molding matter into an infinite myriad of delicate and pristine forms, colors, and aromas that defy the laws of gravity. If you observe closely the growing tips and resulting morphology of most green plants, you will see an expression of grasping at sunlight, spiraling, enveloping – a pulling of a plant species into form.

SunHawk Farms is a dynamic system complete with bio-diverse habitat and internal humus-based fertility. Near the chicken coop you will find compost consisting of matter created at SunHawk. Then, behind the olive orchard -consisting of around 2,800 Tuscan varieties of olive trees- and above the vast oak and madrone forest, you’ll be treated to red-tailed hawks, snowy egrets, great blue herons, and soaring bald eagles.

Along the rolling hills behind Hopland, in verdant and wild Mendocino County, our grapes grow on the south facing slopes of a bow. On it we raise several varieties of Rhone grapes - which are combined into a field blend much like the old Italians and French have done for generations.

The critical point for biodynamic agriculture at SunHawk Farms is that even the tiniest aspect of our farming system, a seed or a bud for instance, contains the archetypal imprint of life. The result is good agronomy practices developed by 1970’s Mendocino Homesteaders and organic gardeners, John Schaeffer and Nancy Hensley.
